The Hong Kong Economic and Trade Office, London (London ETO) continued to celebrate the Year of the Horse in countries under its purview by hosting Chinese New Year events in Russia and the Midlands in the United Kingdom (UK) during February.

The London ETO held Chinese New Year receptions in Moscow and St Petersburg, Russia on February 13 and 14 respectively, as well as in Birmingham, UK on February 18. The reception in Birmingham was the second of its kind organised by the London ETO in the UK this year, after the Chinese New Year reception in London on February 6, in order to expand Hong Kong's outreach to the fast-developing Midlands region of the UK.

Key speaker at all of the events was Director-General of the London ETO, Ms Erica Ng, who explained to local companies how they could benefit from business opportunities in Hong Kong, and how they could take advantage of Hong Kong's position as a gateway to Mainland China and Asia.  She also said that Hong Kong would commence formal negotiations on a Free Trade Agreement with the Association of Southeast Asian Nations.

In Moscow and St Petersburg, Ms Ng highlighted the fast-growing ties between Hong Kong and Russia.  In 2013, the total value of bilateral trade in goods between the two places grew by 10.5% year-on-year to US$3.59 billion.  There were over 223 000 Russian visitor arrivals to Hong Kong last year, a significant increase of 20% over 2012.  Ms Ng said that Hong Kong's position as an international financial, trading and logistics centre would create business opportunities for Russian companies, and encouraged them to do business with and invest in Hong Kong.  She also conveyed her best wishes for Russia's hosting of the Olympic Winter Games in Sochi.

In Birmingham, Ms Ng briefed the audience on the developments in infrastructure projects in Hong Kong and how this would expand Hong Kong's capacity as a trade, logistics and professional services centre.  She highlighted that in 2013, the total value of bilateral trade in goods between Hong Kong and the UK amounted to around US$14 billion.  More than 1 000 British firms have operations in Hong Kong, and more than half of these companies conducted their regional operations from Hong Kong.  She encouraged companies and professionals in the Midlands to seize the opportunities in Hong Kong and think of Hong Kong as their partner in reaching out Asia.

The Chinese New Year events in Russia were co-organised by the London ETO, Hong Kong Trade Development Council (HKTDC) and the Russia - Hong Kong Business Association.  The event in Birmingham was co-organised by the London ETO and HKTDC, and supported by InvestHK.
